North Dakota’s Standing Rock Sioux tribe held a sit-in near the construction site of the proposed Grand Forks oil pipeline on Tuesday.
They say police have turned a blind eye and ignored protesters’ calls for action in response to the planned construction site being surrounded and damaged.
A Facebook page created to promote the planned construction has since been shut down after threats of violence and arrests by state and federal authorities.
Activists on the site say a group of the tribe have burned a banner, which they said they «made out of trash cans on the water.»
But the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says they have not engaged in looting.
«While we recognize our right to a peaceful protest, the construction of the proposed pipeline threatens not only the safety of our fellow citizens, but also the environment, our treaty rights, and our livelihoods,» the tribe said in a statement obtained by local media.
«It is imperative that we confront the actions taken by law enforcement and allow the peaceful demonstration of our First Amendment right to protest on ou경주안마r ancestral land.»
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has also closed its civil rights office across the street from the protests, saying it had no immediate access to the property.
However, state officials announced on Friday the pipeline would be stopped at «very early notice» at an area near the planned pipeline route.

The US Department of Justice said the area is an «open space and it is a private land» and not a government controlled area.
But state officials did warn that the pipeline could be damaged and «could potentially lead to pipeline failure, pipeline leaks and accidents.»
A company called Energy Transfer Partners has yet to confirm that the site is under threat from the Indian tribe, although its public relations firm has previously said it has received numerous calls and emails.
The group has called for hundr샌즈 카지노eds of law enforcement officers and federal investigators to visit the site and check it out.
The protest has drawn international attention. In India, anti-nuclear activist Kailash Satyarthi has been arrested and jailed on charges of «spreading nuclear secrets» following the protest.
